Google Maps

This guide shows you how to set up Google Maps in your app. Google requires billing and the right APIs to be set up before your API key will work, so complete the steps in order.

Your billing, APIs and API key all live inside a Google Cloud project.

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Console and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Click the project picker at the top of the page, then click New Project.
  3. Give your project a name and click Create.
  4. Make sure your new project is selected in the project picker before you continue.

If you already have a project you want to use, select it instead.

Google requires a billing account to be linked before you can use its Maps APIs.

  1. Open the Google Cloud Billing page.
  2. Click Link Billing Account and follow the instructions to complete the setup.

Google may offer credits for eligible free trials. Check the current terms and billing requirements in your Google Cloud account before proceeding.

Step 3: Enable the required Google Maps APIs

Section titled “Step 3: Enable the required Google Maps APIs”

In the same project, open each API page below and click Enable:

  1. Maps JavaScript API
  2. Geocoding API
  3. Maps SDK for iOS
  4. Maps SDK for Android
  5. Places API
  1. In the Google Cloud Console, go to APIs & Services → Credentials.
  2. Click Create credentials, then select API key.
  3. Copy the key that appears. You’ll paste it into Ada in Step 6.

For more detail, see Google’s guide to getting a Google Maps API key.

Section titled “Step 5: Restrict your API key (recommended)”

Restricting your key limits it to the Maps APIs, so it can’t be used for other Google services if it’s ever exposed.

  1. On the Credentials page, click the name of your new API key.
  2. Under API restrictions, select Restrict key.
  3. Select the APIs you enabled in Step 3.
  4. Click Save.
  1. Paste your Google Maps API key into the Google Maps API key field in Ada, then save.
  2. Prompt Ada that you’ve added the Google Maps API key, and ask it to finish setting up the map on the screen you need.

Check that:

  • A billing account is linked to your Google Cloud project (Step 2).
  • All the APIs in Step 3 are enabled in that same project.
  • Your API key was created in that project and was pasted in full (Steps 4 and 6).
  • If you restricted your key, all the APIs from Step 3 are selected (Step 5).

Your map loads only after the screen re-renders

This is usually caused by an incomplete or missing GET endpoint setup. Check that your endpoints are configured correctly.
